Untangle to go Open Source

Security firm Untangle has decided to release their software under GPLv2.

Untangle’s platform for blocking spam, spyware, viruses, adware and more is based on a variety of existing Open Source Solutions (Such as SpamAssassin, ClamAV, Snort, OpenVPN, etc.) which they have integrated and added on features.

Untagle provides both a free (as in beer) Open Source edition and a Professional Package, with additional features, for a monthly subscription price.

On a personal note, I noticed that the company website is Joomla! based and that their blog is WordPress based. I appreciate their commitment in using Open Source platforms, even for these purposes.

As members of the Open Solutions Alliance (OSA), Palamida keeps a watchful eye on the OSS community, ever hopeful that we will see vendor representatives from all corners of the application universe offer up OSS alternatives to traditional, commercial products. Untangle’s announcement is frankly, welcome news. To have more OSS security vendors coming forth helps stamp out the FUD that still runs rampant throughout upper management. Security is always a question attached to OSS whether earned or not, and having viable, competitive OSS security solutions, helps further vet that OSS can exists peacefully next to commercial legacy apps and may in fact outshine them in many ways.

Stamping out the FUD is always a good cause with OSS. A few years back I would mainly hear FUD from management about reliability and support “issues” of OSS, now I encounter more discussions regarding licensing and IP. As this is the case, I think the concept of Palmida’s products to be of great assistance, and I will definitely try them out.
